Thought I'd share my experiences with syndication a little right now . . .

I came close to being syndicated about 3-4 times, where the syndicates asked to see more material ( to look at the sustainability and quality of the comic ), but to no avail, I struck out every time.

My last one was about 2004-05 when United tried my daily comic panel, " JEST SPORTS " on line . . . it ran about 15-16 months, then they dropped it.

Creators tried an idea I had back around 1999, it was a daily panel about cats and dogs called " Reigning Cats and Dogs " . . . Later they thought it would not work having both cats and dogs in the came comic, so they deep-sixed the idea.

I really got excited back when Universal first began their syndicate around '75-76 . . . I had an idea for a strip called " BITZ and PIECES " . . They were just getting started and I was familiar with the people there, they were the best in the business. So when they asked to see more, I didn't sleep for two weeks. Didn't make it. It's a wonder there aren't more alcoholic cartoonists. I never had the problem, but I would understand someone in my shoes that succombed to the libations.

Although this is NOT technically true, and in no way is it actually 100% correct . . . HOWEVER, HOWEVER . . . it is, you might say, or COULD truthfully say he has a slight edge over another sap cartoonist trying to get chosen . . . simply because there are only so many slots every week and he has a chance every week . . because he has a horse in every race . . . a SLIGHT edge . . . BECAUSE, since he, being the cartoon editor picks from thousands and thousands of cartoons to be chosen besides HIS to fill out the rest of the small batch to be reviewed by the other two staff members who will actually thin the herd to the final amount that they will actually buy that week . . . HE HAS MORE CHANCES TO BE SEEN FOR THE FINAL SELECTION, period.

The same analogy is the more lottery tickets you buy, OR the more often you buy, your chances of winning is increased exponentially, because you have a horse in every race !

I don't think you have to be a rocket scientist to figure it out. And if you can tell me with a straight face and say, aw-w-h Peter, you're just sour apples . . That's YOUR problem . . . You just can't cut it . . . admit it . . . Your problem is you KNOW TOO MUCH . . . You can't PRETEND you can't draw . . You can't fake it, HA . . HA , HA !

This reminds me when I had my sign shop in the metropolitan Washington D.C. area back from 1975 til 2001 . . . although my plant was always in the Virginia suburbs, I did a lot of my business in the nation's capital . . . It seems the bulk of my income was generated from the K street corridor. The money seemed to originate right there, almost like it was being printed in the basements in those buildings . . .

Anyway, almost every trip downtown you were acosted by panhandlers as you approached an entrance to a nice office building or in front of a classy restaurant as you were entering OR exiting these establishments . . . . . and sometimes AGRESSIVE panhandlers abounded. . .

For you people out there who do NOT know what aggressive panhandling is . . . here's my definition of it: The poor people would actually get in front of you so that you bump in to them or they actually put their hands on you and sometimes grab your arm . . . I was always an easy mark . . I kept change and plenty of one dollar bills handy . . . it was much easier and safer to just give them what you can and then get the hell out . . as quickly as you can.

The scariest thing that happened to me . . . one time in about 1996-97 , I was downtown on a Saturday about one PM . . . I had my Polaroid and I was going to take a picture of a hotel front entrance and get some measurements for a temporary name change, I think they were changing from a Hilton establishment to another hotel chain.

The one time I had forgotten to have ready some handy spare change for the street people, . . . I remember that I only had a ten and a twenty and no anything else in my front pockets. .. Maybe I would be lucky that day.

I was walking alone . . in the middle of the day . . . downtown D.C. . . . there were plenty of people around, but in this case the nearest people where I was walking were about 20 to 30 feet away. This might as well be 200 to 300 feet away it seemed . . .

As I'm walking, a guy walks quickly up to me, jaywalking to confront me . . . he looks like a MIKE TYSON DOUBLE . . and he looked manacing . . . he's holding hands with a little black kid about six years old . . . he says, " Hey, I came down from Pennsylvania looking for work, do you have some change so I can get something to eat ? " ( Always thinking of a quick one-liner, I almost said, Hell, I'm going to Pennsylvania tomorrow to look for work myself !, No kidding ! ) But my common sense kicked in and decided this was not the guy to test my one liner on.

I thought to myself, great, no problem, I reached into my pocket and pulled the ten dollar bill . . . out . . . partially, accidentally, just slightly . . I knew then I was doomed, I needed that ten dollar bill, but it was too late . . I shoved it back into my pocket and he grabs my arm and says, " Hey , I saw that ten, lemme have it! "

I mumbled to myself , ( in my mind ), where in the hell am I ? What country am I in ? . . What time is it ? ! I pulled my arm away from his grip and started to walk fast and the guy is right behind me dragging his kid . . it was escalating . . I noticed as I was almost running, and then I actually was running quickly along a transit bus about to make a stop at the bus stop . . . I quickly bucked the line and got aboard the bus . . the Tyson look-alike glared at me from behind the crowd and was waving his arms madder than hell . . Man , I had a helluva time trying to explain what happened to the bus driver . . I stayed on the bus for about a mile, then I got off and walked slowly back to where my car was . . exactly where " TYSON " was waiting for me . . .

When I got close to where it all happened, I saw my car parked exactly where I left it on a side street, and ran like hell, opened the door as quickly as I could, locked all the doors, started the engine, and drove quickly to my favorite watering hole right across the Key bridge to the Marriott hotel.

I slid quietly on my favorite bar stool that was waiting for me, smiled to the bartender . . stuck my hand up and mumbled: the usual . . "A double Jameson's Irish Whiskey on the rocks, Rick. "

Rick smiles and inquires, " How's it goin' Roy ? "

I smiled and said " If things were going any better, people would think I was cheatin' ! " ( I found out a long time ago, that THAT was the best way to forget something like what I had just gone through ) .

I don't know, but it works for me.

Chris Matthews' ( Cartoon )

Watching Chris Matthews a couple nights ago, he was criticizing Mitt Romney for the point he was making about listening to the generals on the battlefield . . . After all, he continued, THAT is the whole idea of our forefathers, that the civilian president would be the one to make that decision, because you could not have too much trust in the generals . . . I am paraphrasing . . . .

Although most intelligent people would agree on the wisdom and truthfullness ( on its surface ) of Matthew's statement . . . I am quite surprised that a learned politically-savvy guy like Matthews would think that no one would remember when the CIVILIANS like McNnamara, in his own guilt-ridden book, " McNamara's War Reflections " doing a meoculpa about the stupidity of his actions on the Vietnam war . .. . the point is that there was at that time an abysmal ignorance that was present around the White House. ( When it came to any war experience ) . . .like there is now.

Shame on you Matthews, you know better than that. ( Or do you ? )

Now, don't you think you shouldn't have made that statement ? And you wonder why your program is last or almost last in that time slot . . . THINK, THINK, THINK before you open your mouth. The people out here, even where they hug their bibles and guns are not stupid.

Every now and then I check on him to see if he's " gotten-it " yet. Sad. He doesn't LOOK dumb . I actually kinda LIKE the guy.

I forgot to sign this one . . . If someone steals it and I find out about it and I cannot resolve it without either them to desist using it or agree on a kind of fair competitive negotiated compensation over the telephone, I then promise them that I can convince him or her to never, never to do this again. Leatherneck cartoon - Roy Delgado

This drawing is in the latest issue of the Magazine of the Marines, as it is called. It appears on page 16 in a regular feature double-page spread of cartoons titled Leatherneck Laffs.

I sold my first cartoons to this magazine in the summer of 1956 while satationed in Okinawa. Staff Sergeant Gordon Bess was the cartoon Editor at the time. He later created the comic strip " REDEYE " for King Features.

Quick story -
I went through boot camp in May 1955 at the U.S.M.C. Recruit Depot in San Diego, California. At that time, Hollywood was filming a movie called " The D.I. ", starring Jack Webb.   The film was released in 1957.

For reality purposes, they had a lot of shots all over the base, especially sequences showing platoons marching all over the asphalt parade ground.  They used mostly actors in the film, BUT they did use a few actual recruits with small speaking parts. It so happened, they used MY platoon 238 in many of the shots and a few guys in my platoon are in the film. The credits at the end of the film mentions a few of my buddies names along with my platoon 238.

With my Leatherneck magazine arriving this morning and me posting this cartoon today . . .

And coincidentally, along with seeing the film last night on The Turner Network . . . it all came back to me and had to get it off my mind for now.

I've always thought the post office prices were fair.

I think actually they get a bad rap for the great work they do. However, there is no doubt, I believe, that if it was run by a civilian outfit, it could show a profit, and not be in the red consistently as they are now.

The same thing about art supplies. You take a bic pen or a cheap pen you get at the dime store . . . you get paid $600.00 for one drawing, ( HBR ) for just one use ! . . . Get real. Quitchyerbitchin . . . I've heard a lot of cartoonists complaining about the price of art supplies.

I say, YOU make them and sell them cheaper.

Robert Rafferty passes away Jan. 22, 2012

I just now ( 10:45AM EST ) received a phone call from Loys Reynolds, the lovely wife of Robert Rafferty that he passed away last Saturday of prostate cancer. He was living at Sun City Center, Florida.

Bob was a partner and friend of mine, I will miss him sadly.

Bob Rafferty was a long time successful writer. He wrote and had published thousands of his gags, collaborating with many famous magazine cartoonists too many to name here.

In the early years especially, he wrote hundreds of ideas for Hank Ketcham to use in his now famous Dennis the Menace Enterprise.

In Hank's book: The Merchant of Dennis the Menace, Hank named both Bob Rafferty and Al Batt as two of his talented prolific writers on his team.

Bob was a staff writer for a bilingual children's comedy program seen on more than 150 PBS stations.

His eclectic writing credentials include publication of a number of travel guidebooks - - - several which he co-authored with his wife, Loys Reynolds, as well as other non-fiction books and short plays.

Bob and I were partners on a book of cartoons, which was published in 2006 called CRUISING IS AMUSING. It was a special project for Carnival Cruise Lines in Miami, Florida.

18840a Harvard Business Review cartoon - Roy Delgado

This drawing appeared in HBR magazine, February, 2005 on page 103. Back then, the magazine had a double-page spread of cartoons somewhere in the middle of the magazine, it was a feature called Strategic Humor.

Lately, the feature has been reduced to only one page, probably for budgetary reasons. They do continue to sprinkle a few other cartoons throughout the mag, thank God. It is one of the very few decent markets left for magazine cartoonists, who seem to be left twisting in the wind . . .

The cartoons in the magazine have always had a " New Yorkerish" look and feel . . . and to my estimation ARE mostly New Yorker cartoonists consistently throughout.

Wall Street Journal cartoon - Roy Delgado

feature that has been running steady for over 50 years, edited by the what I call a " Hall of Fame Cartoon Editor, Charles 'Wolf' Preston . . .

The Wall Street Journal doesn't like to get TOO political in their cartoons. About as close as you can get is something kind of subtle like you see here . . . The current President in the White House now blames everything he can on " Bush " . . . I'm sure back in the old,old days it was the S.O.S., nothing has changed.

Funny thing, just last week, WSJ bought another new one . . . Scene: The Pearly Gates . . . St. Peter listening to what is obviously a Liberal politician . . . The pol with a briefcase states: " I made a lot of mistakes, but most of them were the fault of the Bush administration. "

This is the cartoon I'm talkin' about right here below . . .

After I got paid, some editor at the top had reservations about it and at the last minute, they pulled it and asked if I could come up with another gagline like right now . . . to substitute for the "boiler-plate" Pearly Gates scene they were ready to go with.

I offered two substitute gaglines: First one was . . . The guy is telling St. Peter: " I want a Skybox. "

Second suggestion: The guy is saying: " Are my Forever Stamps still good ? "

They went with the first.

This is probably the most enjoyable part of being in this business . . . probably boring to outsiders . . but to your peers it's this kind of trading war stories and getting real "inside" chit chat from the your buddies - - - maybe over lunch or a beer or a starbucks - - -

Kinda reminds me of Larry King, kinda braggin' about all the famous people he's met and starts one of his short stories by calling a famous person by his first name, like - - - " - - I remember, Bob Mitchum told me, blah-blah-blah - - - "

I was in Washington D.C.. back in the '90's when I had my sign business in the area and I was leaving the underground parking lot at an office building on Vermont Street, near 15th Street and K Street downtown. My appointment had been in that building and it was the National Association of Facial Reconstructive Surgery or something like that . . it was to discuss about designing and producing and installing graphics on their interior glass door, I think they were on the fifth floor.

After getting into my car in the basement parking lot, which I walked to from the elevator there, I wheeled around to exit up the ramp and just then, I ended up driving just by where the people had exited the elevator lobby and I see what I thought looked exactly like Greta Van Susteren standing there waiting for her car . . . . . she was about 15 feet from my driver's window. I slowed down and I hollared like a moron, " Greta ! " - - - and she answered " Yes. " . . . and then I replied ,

" I watch you every day ! "

And she relied politely, " Keep on Watchin' ! "

I mumbled to myself, some day I can talk like Larry King !

At that time, Greta used to come on at noon on CNN and I used to catch her at a lunch watering hole in Woodbridge, Virginia near my sign shop . . . those were the days . . .

I coulda been somebody . . . instead of a bum which is what I am . . . Let's face it . . . It was your fault, Charlie . . it was you . . . Remember that night in the Garden? You came to my dressing room and you said, This ain't your night, boy , we're going for the price on Wilson . . . This ain't my night ? ! . . . I coulda taken Wilson apart ! . . . It was YOU Charlie . . . It was you . . .

Muhammad ALI - The Greatest, Happy 70th Birthday !

Today is a special day. It is the 70th Birthday of probably the greatest boxer who ever lived.

Quickly, my Mumammad Ali story . . . Back around 1972 I was living and working in Tucson, Arizona for Addis Signs, a long established electrical sign company in Tucson. I was working as a sign sketch artist and was managing the plant.

That year, NESA (The National Electric Sign Association) was holding their international association convention in Washington, D.C. at the new Washington Hilton Hotel.

My boss, Tom Addis invited me to join him and attend this annual important-to-the-industry event.

I said great and we were off.

We got a room at the Washington Hilton Hotel, the site of the convention.

I remember being in the elevator one day and someone stated that Muhammad Ali was in the Coffee Shop right now.

I thought this might be a great opportunity to see the champ for myself . . . so I hustled to the lobby coffee shop.

There was a light crowd of about 80 people around him as he stood near the counter.

I remember hearing a steady loud speech from the champ touting he was the greatest.

I ambled my way up closer to the excitement . . . I felt and knew I was in the company of a truly great giant of a person.

He literally stood there like a real giant with his entourage of about 5 men and a group of at least 6 or7 of the most beautiful women I've ever seen surrounding him . . several people were in line waiting anxiously to get this man's autograph. I quickly got at the end of the que and searched for a piece of paper and a pen.

As my turn came I handed the champ's aide and bodyguard, ( a six-foot burly Fruit-of-Islam-type gentleman ) the only thing I could find for Muhammad's autograph . . . My American Airline's boarding pass ! It was better than nothing, at least the back was blank.

When I handed it to him, he turned it over to inspect the back side before handing it to Ali ( As if it might be an I.O.U. note ! ) , Not a bad idea, I thought.

I treasured that autograph for at least 30 years . . then, like a moron, I misplaced it !

I'm a real sucker ( If that's what you want to call it )

for the wisdom nuggets you see regularly posted on this blog . . . I figure if you throw enough of the stuff on the wall, some of it will stick.

I'd rather listen to Edison's statements than the other's, like those that see the glass half empty . . . I'd rather see the same glass half-full . . . they are BOTH true, but seeing the same glass half FULL is just the way winners think.

It's the way you choose to look at life.

One way of seeing it, ( half-empty ) can be depressing and the other way ( half-full ) is more uplifting and hopeful and just makes you feel better .

It is a fact that if you feel happy and "good" . . you perform better, period . . . that's good enough for me right there.

Roy Delgado - Family and United States Marine Corps Ball - - Nov. 10, 1958 -

This is yours truly on the top and my three children. I started taking this pose with the three kids on a lawn chair when they were about 4-7 years old and I would update it with the same pose usually about every 5 years or so . . . I still have the photos somewhere. It got harder and harder, not only because as they left the nest, it'd slip my mind to get around to do it and also, I noticed I had to start buying longer and heavier-duty lawn chairs !

Rumaging through some old photos someone asked to send, I found this one . . . taken at my girlfriend's apartment on 16th Street, N.W. in Washington, D.C. - - It's very dear to me and this time was probably the happiest days of my life.

I had met Betty Daniels, who was literally the girl living next door and it went from there. I was stationed at Marine Barracks, 8th & Eye Streets S.E., 200 yards from the Navy Yard.

Marine Barracks in Washington, D.C. was actually a showplace . . . Everyone, all 500 marines there were of ceremonial stature . . . all were between 5'-10" to 6'-3", no overweights or extemely thin people were allowed . . . no glasses in rank . . . reason, so that the platoons, when standing in rank were extremely all neat and straight . . . the man next to you may only be 1/4 " taller or shorter than you . . . uniformity and neatness . . like clones.

The Base there was home to The U.S Marine Corps Institute, where I worked as an artist located in the Navy Yard . It was a both a correspondence school and a guard unit where we designed, wrote and illustrated courses for marines throughout the world. We had four artists, really talented and creative and we illustrated the various technical and training manuals with black and white ink drawings mostly. The courses varied vastly from a sketching course to bayonet fighting, knife fighting, Tank warfare, etc.

The base also was home to the elite world famous U.S. Marine silent drill team, which you may have seen on television. It also housed the U.S. Marine band and the official U.S. Presidential Guard. This is the guard that stands at the White House and has the helicopter, Marine One to ferry the President around to Andrews Air Force Base or wherever. Our unit also is dispached to Camp David to protect the President whenever he is visiting there on vacation or has a visitor there.

The base is the oldest post in the Marine Corps, the same red brick buildings, with manicured lawns ( Since 1880 ) sits proudly there. It is only one square block in size and houses only 500 marines.

Because of limited housing space on the base, Many non-commissioned-officers, like myself lived off post in apartments and houses. It was a coincidence that a three-story townhouse with 7 marines living in it would be next-door to a townhouse with seven single girls living there, all mostly looking for each another but really didn't know it.

The Marine Barracks, consisting of the offices complex, post exchange, cafe, gym and marching field also was the home of the Commandant's mansion. And right next door in a line were four brick houses, each a home to a general who were assigned to pentagon duties or worked elswhere in the city.

Betty and I had met in June of 1958, we became best friends, started going steady and in January 30, 1959 we married.

I've been in love with the same woman for 51 years - - - If my wife ever finds out about it, she'll kill me !

Actually, I borrowed that line from Henny Youngman, one of my favorite comedians.

I just drew this one a couple days ago and posted it . . . I looked at it today and decided to restage it - - - it needed that something that was missing - - - after I restaged it, it seemed so obvious - - -

This is the part of drawing that I think is so gratifying - - - you draw something that didn't exist - - - when you finish it, it's kinda okay, then you look at it the next day and many times, it hits you right between the eyes !

You say to yourself, you fool! - - NOW - - I GOTTA go back and redraw the whole thing ! but that is the way it is supposed to be, so do not fret. It IS what it IS.

The funny thing is, that is the way everything is created in the universe . . . it is very rarely, indeed that a creator of anything can get it right the first time - - - Did you hear me ? H-m-mm ? YES,EVERYBODY.

Last time I was in NYC a couple months or so ago, I took a cab from Penn Station to Sardi's to have a good stiff drink before lunching with Sam Gross. I grabbed the first cab, the cabbie was wearing a turban . . . nothing wrong with that . . . I had to repeat where I was going five times, finally, finally, real s-l-o-w, I gave him the address and I finally made it . . . what is so amazing is that only in America can you come, do not speak the language, get a job as a cab driver in one of the biggest cities in the world, where you don't know one street from another. . I mean, how in the hell do they do it ? and make money ! without speaking the language and being in a strange city ? ! I gave him a good tip . . it's my kind of guy . . . on top of that, they send money home, regularly, OR, OR they send money to a an organization that sends the money to someone with nefarious plans against trhis country, I took an educated guess and hope he sent it to his poor folks back in Islamabad.

I love this country, no one has an excuse to go hungry. Too many opportunities. It doesn't take a PhD. Anyone can make it here if they REALLY want it bad enough.

18716 Cannibal Cartoon - Where have they gone?

Where have all the cannibal cartoons gone ?

I guess they were popular back in the 50's . . . after the G.I.'s had returned from the South Pacific, you used to see them even in the Saturday Evening Post, and True, and Argosy and a whole host of other major magazines.

I guess even moreso, they are probably politically incorrect now and maybe too "lowbrow" . . . like The Three Stooges . . . I think in heaven, as a cartoon in The New Yorker depicted a few years ago . . . ( To paraphrase ), the scene was that Pearly Gates had a sign pointing to the right which read: "People who Love The Three Stooges" and another sign pointing to the left which read: "People who Hate The Three Stooges" . . .

You know where I went . . . first guy I bumped into was Bob Weber Sr. ( Moose & Molly and Slylock Fox, both King Features syndicated comics )

I also ran into Bob Mankoff with the Three Stooges crowd, who whispered under his breath to me, " Don't tell anyone you saw me here . . . it'll tarnish my image. "

My cartoon appeared on page 38.

It is always wise to submit cartoons that are captionless of course, because obviously it translates the same in any language . . . and in Europe, most people speak several languages, unlike the United States where most people only speak one.

There's an old joke circulating in Europe that goes something like this:

What do you call someone wo speaks TWO LANGUAGES ? Answer: BI-LINGUAL.

What to you call someone who speaks THREE LANGUAGES ?

Answer: TRI-LINGUAL.

What do you call someone who speaks MANY LANGUAGES ?

Answer: MULTI-LINGUAL.

V Gene Meyers - Veteran Magazine Cartoonist

Back in the early 90's I met Gene in New York on one of my regular jaunts up to the big apple with my friend, Bob Weber Sr.

I remember eating at a popular deli called Wolf's and we chatted about the business and stuff.

Later when I got home to the Washington, D.C. area I wrote Gene and we traded originals . . . at that time I remember seeing his work pretty regularly in Ladies Home Journal and several major magazines and then became a regular at Playboy where you see his fine work to this day. He has a unique funny style . . . I like his work.

Glenn R. Bernhardt - Magazine Cartoonist Master

Back in 1954 and right out of high school, while attending Billy Hon's School of Cartooning in Los Angeles, I wrote Glenn Bernhardt and begged him for an original.

Today while rummaging through some old files I ran across this one he'd sent me with a short note.

He didn't live far away and had planned to visit him, but one thing after another came up and before I knew it I'd joined the Marines and was shipped to the far east . . .

The note said that this particular cartoon came out in The Saturday Evening Post, and the funny thing about it, he'd seen several almost identical versions of it. But they still bought it. Like they say, I good gag is a good gag, period.

He told me to stick to it, or something like that, and like a damn fool, I did exactly that.

Glenn at that time appeared everywhere, and probably was one of the top ten sellers of that era.

He had a nice genaric style of that day.

I always like cartoon gags about the frontier days . . .

cowboys and injuns stuff . . . smoke signals is

a great venue to work with . . . lots of material

using smoke signals . . I remember another one similar . . the guy is telling him . . . " Tell him this message is important, and then put him on hold . . . "

There were a lot of smart people walking around at about that time . . . and we are STILL learning from.

In The last hundred years it was Napoleon Hill ( 1925 ):

" The Law of Success " was published, suggested by Andrew Carnegie ( steel tycoon ) the world's first billionaire . . . followed 3 years later by " Think and Grow Rich ", a Cliff Notes version you might say, ( for the masses )

This is mainly where Anthony Robbins, Paul Meyer, and the 300 plus other similar-type books and courses ( including the latest " The Secret " phenomena ) were immensley influenced by.

All of these 300-plus books and "courses" either borrowed, stole, copied, reworded, rearranged, plagerized ( I misplaced my thesaurus, but you get the drift ), etc. from the "original" Napoleon Hill's " Think and Grow Rich".

Ghandi sent a man to shadow Napoleon Hill, 24-7 for 30 days to see if he was real. It was then published in India shortly after that.

Subsequently, it has become one of the most published book ( Think and Grow Rich ) in the world and available in almost every language.

My point is, why not go to the original and most exaustively researched book ( 25 years before he wrote it ) of all time, " Think and Grow Rich " ,

Hm-m-m-n ?

Get the real McCoy, paperback, from Amazon or whatever . . . I remember, years ago when I first met Bob Weber Sr. ( Syndicated cartoonist, King Features ) in 1975-76 in Washington, D.C., Think and Grow Rich, the book came up, and WOW, we both agreed it was the most influential, powereful and helpful book he and I had ever read that helped us in our cartoon and business careers.

Do yourself another favor, and read " Think and Grow Rich"
