Leatherneck Laffs - Roy Delgado

This drawing appears on page 26 of the August issue of Leatherneck, The Magazine of the Marines -

Also featured on the same page are some fine cartoons by veteran cartoonists, Orehek, Chalk and Kilgore . . . sounds like a law firm, " Orehek, Chalk and Kilgore " . . . a darn good law firm . .

It is ingrained in you in the Marine Corps that your weapon is your best friend . . . unfortunately, this mutt's had his feelings hurt . .

Cartoon of the day

This cartoon was sold yesterday to Leatherneck Magazine.  It's kind of an inside joke in that in The Marine Corps, your rifle is your best friend.  Your are taught that it IS your best friend because it can keep you alive.  You learn to take it apart and put it back together blindfolded.

That is why they put so much empahsis that every Marine must qualify with the rifle on the rifle range.  Sometimes you have to sleep with your rifle . . . it becomes your best friend . . in the cartoon above, the poor dog senses that he has competition for that title right now . . . you know how dogs can sense fear . .  of course they can also sense love . . .

Reader's Digest cartoon - Roy Delgado

This drawing appears on page 80 in the February issue.

I almost always use characters in my military cartoons depicted as U. S. Marines.   Since I proudly wore the uniform for four years, I of course have the correct details of the summer and winter uniforms embedded in my mind's eye forever and of course the famous dress blue uniform is always ready when needed . . . The dress blue uniform is only worn for formal affairs.

The dress blue uniform is not issued to every marine . . . it IS however issued to you if it is worn in the particular job you are assigned to, for example, all embassy guards around the world wear it, ceremonial guard units, like the ones stationed at Marine Barracks in downtown Washington, D.C., where I was stationed at wear it, that outfit is the same guys you see that guard the President of the United States.
