Bob Tupper, Cotham, Rodrigues - Master cartoonists

Bob Tupper was a girlie cartoonist from the 50's . . . his style was influential to many upcoming neophytes like myself back then . . . around 1954 I wrote him and asked for an original and he quickly sent me this gem . . . there's something unique about holding a piece of original art from an artist you admire and you stand there looking at it at exactly the same distance as the artist when he drew it . . . it's eerie . . . you can examine and study it inch by inch . . . his mastery of the red sable brush is obvious . . . it looks like a #0 or #1 brush . . .

Frank Cotham has always been one of my top 4 NYer cartoonists of all time.  His style of humor and his unique quirky original style makes him stand out in front of most of the competition.

Here is a Charlie Rodrigues original I acquired by trading another cartoonist's cartoon original for about 15 years ago  . . . It's from his syndicated panel called simply, CHARLIE.  Rodrigues work is known mostly from his regular appearances in Playboy, The New Yorker and many major other publications.  He was one of my favorites of all time.  I miss his work.

Cartoon of the day . . .

A couple of my favorite Wayne Dyer gold nuggets:

" No one can create anger or stress within you; only you can do that by virtue of how you process your world. "

Wordly Wisdom

Aphorism #243  DO NOT BE TOO MUCH OF A DOVE

"Alternate the cunning of the serpent with the candour of the dove.  Nothing is easier than to deceive an honest man.  He believes in much who lies in naught; who does no deceit, has much confidence.  To be deceived is not always due to stupidity, it may arise from sheer goodness.  There are two sets of men who can guard themselves from injury: those who have experienced it at their own cost, and those who have observed it at the cost of others.  Prudence should use as much suspicion as subtelty uses snares, and none need be so good as to enable others to do him ill.  Combine in yourself the dove and the serpent, not as a monster but as a prodigy. Cartoon of the day - Roy Delgado

If this gag line is too small to read, the guy is saying:

" I must confess, you were the one who caught my eye as soon as I arrived. "

This cartoon appeared in Playboy Magazine about 5 months ago . . . I always like the extremely "obvious " gag  . . . the secret is to make the situation and the statement really, really over the top . . . extremely obvious, like this one, or it just doesn't work . . . It seems like I am just NOW really understanding this principle. , more than ever . . .

On this same subject, I remember showing a cartoon of mine to Sam Gross for commenting and reaction . . .
The cartoon showed an outside view of a tavern in a strip mall . . . a man walks by and has a puzzled surprised look and does a  a double-take at the sign in the window which reads:  " Now with a playroom for the children "

I kind of liked the cartoon, but Sam informed me that the reason it wasn't funny is that in New York, there IS  A BAR WITH A SIGN LIKE THAT.

Only in New York . . . again, the reason was that it didn't go far enough !

New Yorker Cartoon - Roy Delgado

Here is the one cartoon out of the over 19,000 that I've submitted to the The New Yorker AND rejected over the years that I'd love to see . . . in The New Yorker Magazine . . . I honestly believe it would become one that everyone would talk about and end up taped on refrigerators and in cubicles all over the place.

Of course you will probably NEVER see this cartoon in the New Yorker . . . But it doesn't mean it doesn't  BELONG in the magazine.

It is healthy to not take yourself too seriously . . . Ask anyone who knows anything about mental health . . .

You take your WORK seriously . . . that's what you take serious.  And that is what I am doing.

This cartoon appeared in Barron's a couple years ago.

Sat Eve Post cartoons - Roy Delgado

The two cartoons here also appeared in the May/June 2011 issue on page 22, of The Saturday Evening Post.

The full page of cartoons consisted of 4 cartoons which was titled " Humor ".  The other two were by veteran cartoonists Lachowski and Carpenter.  The ubiqutous Marty Bucella also had several cartoons in this issue.  His expert use of color is always fresh and clean and reproduces well.

SAT EVE POST - Roy Delgado

This drawing appears on page 9 in the May/June, 2011 issue of The Saturday Evening Post.

The drawing was inked with a micron pen and colored with the PaintShopPro 9 program . . . the " zip-a-tone " patterns on the  man's blue pants and on the rug were added also with the computer program.

Note the shiny metal/plastic appearance on the TV . . . it was also executed with the program.

The man in the olive suit also has a fine dot pattern.

CARTOON OF THE DAY - ROY DELGADO

You hardly see any gypsy fortune teller cartoons any more . . . I'm assuming it's because of political correctness .

Actually, to me, it is more at making fun at hacks, or charlatans, or phonies . . . let's face it, there are endless stories of this type person taking advantage of either unsophisticated elderlies, the ignorant, the gullible, etc. - - - the country bumpkin who just arrived in the city, etc.

A fool and his money are soon parted.

Gypsies, tramps and thieves . . . It's amazing Sonny and Cher were never sued !

Anyway, I always thought it was a funny occupation . . .

I guess it's one of those things . . . it's funny if you're laughing at someone else, as long as it isn't you . . .  right ?

Problems with this blog

Unfortuneately, just as I was getting familiar with my brand new custom built computer with 8 Gigs, 32 bit & Windows 7 . . . . I had some real problems . . . strange windows opening up . . .  unable to post images on my blog . . . then I learned today that Microsoft just upgraded the Windows 7 and my Geek says that Microsoft stated that it might cause some temporary difficulties to SOME programs . . .  maybe that is what happened . . . as of now I cannot post images, but I'll keep trying . . .

All this time, we pictured him in a cave something like this . . . Maybe now there will be a Broadway Play called " USAMA MIA! ", along the line, " MAMA MIA ! "

Now we need some lyrics . . .

12889 cartoon of the day - Barron's cartoon

Here is a Cartoon from about a year ago which came out in the financial spreadsheet, Barron's, part of Murdoch's media empire . . .

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I just heard a rumor that Usama's last request as the Navy Seal aimed his Glock at his head was a feeble . . . " Look, Why can't we just get along ? "

Here's a cartoon which hasn't appeared yet . . . I think it was supposed to be for a Reader's Digest book of cartoons . . . like the series of Laughter is the best medicine books that they've published for many years . . anyway, here it is . . . one of my personally favorite cat cartoons . . I've got three cats . . . that might explain . . .

cartoon of the week 11916 - cowboys - Roy Delgado

Whoops ! I just noticed the cartoon I uploaded did not get posted . . . which explains below what is goin' on . . .

will post it  later when I get my computer back from my local Geeks.

I've had trouble on the internet lately and had to send my main desktop computer in to the geeks in town to clean up and tune it and generally give it an overhaul . . . so I'm trying to limp long on my laptop . . . sorry, but I'll be back full steam in a couple days . . . meanwhile I'll keep slogging along . . . just bear with me for hopefully just a couple more days . . .
