Cartoon of the Day - Roy Delgado 18048

In trying to push the envelope, you can occasionally get into trouble because everyone sees it differently . . . what is racist to one would just be tolerent to others . . .the second would say, ' What's the big deal ? 'there is a thin line however . . . and usually the two never meet in agreement . . . anyway, I think it's funny, and I can't see any harm ( But who really knows, maybe I'm a closet racist and don't know it ? )

Lighten up, fer Crysakes!

Cartoon of the week - Roy Delgado -

You can't help but wonder if the guys in the middle east look at women in the same way as us in the west . .  some guys here are "leg-men' . . . others " breast-men" . . and still others " buttocks-men'". . .  . over there, I guess you're stuck with ankles, toes . . and YES, EYES !

I'm sure the EYES gotta be the most attractive thing to get a hold of your attention . . I was in the middle east once and I saw a plump woman in a burka with beautiful eyes . . . as she walked by I noticed a wiggle to her gait . . . man, it looked two kids wrestling under a blanket !

I said to myself, I'm outta here !  ( Before I get in trouble )

There's nothing like nepotism at work, I'm sure most of us have been victims of the crime . . . or have seen partisanship displaying its ugly head at work . . . eventually the great day comes when the last relative goes off to into the sunset . . .

Sample of my dog daily panel, Buljert.

Wisdom from Balthasar Gracian

From Balthasar's  " The Art of Worldly Wisdom "

" Where the one is fickle the other is enduring.  The first for life, the second afterwards; the one against envy, the other against oblivion.  Fortune is desired, at times assisted: fame is earned.  The desire for fame springs from man's best part.  It was and is the sister of the giants; it always goes to extremes - - horrible monsters or brilliant prodigies. "

( This is Aphorism #10 Fortune and Fame )

-----------------------------------------------------

I just recently stumbled upon this gifted, holy, humble visionary, ( I call him ) . . . . his site has an aphorism everyday . . . although some are a little lengthy, some are home runs . . . I highly recommend the site for a quick shot of energy and humbleness first thing in the morning . . a good way to start your day . . . It's really great to be alive !

As Hugh Prather would say:  " It's really safe to be happy now. "

The New Yorker - satire cover

This is a New Yorker cover that you will never see because it just ain't right. It doesn't make any sense ( in some people's mind ) Anyway, you're lookin' at it right here.

Is it politically correct or incorrect ? . . . I thought that since now ( so they tell me ) down is up and up is down and bad is good and the middle inside out . . . now you could publish something like this . . .

If it feels good, do it, they used to say . . . back in the 60's .

This drawing appears on page 26 of the August issue of Leatherneck, The Magazine of the Marines -

Also featured on the same page are some fine cartoons by veteran cartoonists, Orehek, Chalk and Kilgore . . . sounds like a law firm, " Orehek, Chalk and Kilgore " . . . a darn good law firm . .

It is ingrained in you in the Marine Corps that your weapon is your best friend . . . unfortunately, this mutt's had his feelings hurt . .

Barry Blitt New Yorker cover - July 25, 2011

On the cover  of the New Yorker magazine ( which I can't show here ) I just received today has a drawing of two lesbians holding hands in wedding gowns walking over a bridge leading into New York City probably on their way to get officially married now that it is legal to do so in the Big Apple . . .  two same-sex couples to wed, finally.  The drawing on the cover is smartly executed, sophisticated and perfect at this time . . . and as usual, a nice rendering by the regular cover artist Barry Blitt . . looks like pen and ink and water color in a very loose and free style.  I like Barry's work.

This particular cartoon of mine shown here would've been a perfect addition inside, especially in this particular issue . . . it IS in good taste and I think it's funny . . . I think I'll send it in the next batch . . . sooner or later, the staff at the New Yorker will be so excited that they will no longer be able to stiff my material any more . . . ask anyone, this cartoon belongs in the magazine.  Go ahead, ask anyone !

Someone take my bluff.  What possible reason could they say . . . besides something like:  " Sorry, your stuff is not quite right for The New Yorker, blah, blah, etc. "  . . .   What are you, nuts ?

I never thought it would this much of a high to get rejected and rejected and rejected and rejected . . . from The New Yorker . . . You wait, I'llk show the bastards. I've PAID my dues . . . Satire, Gag ReCap Sipress, NYer Cartoonist

If you notice, the drawing is in faux-Mankoff style and signed in a Mankoff style signature: " Delgado "

Yes, Actually you CAN draw like Cypress . . er-r-r Sipress . . that is IF, IF you happen to break your popsicle stick J-U-S-T right ! . . .  ( before dipping it into the india ink . . . )

You can't draw LIKE Cyprus, but you CAN,  draw IN Cyprus, they have a growing art colony there, it's actually The REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS . . . a EurAsian island in the  eastern Mediterranean, east of Greece, south of Turkey and west of Syria . . .

Now CYPRESS is a totally different thing . . it's actually ITALIAN CYPRESS you hear so much about, a great evergreen shrub popular with landscapers . .

Actually, seriously, SIPRESS is a New Yorker cartoonist who "fits" the mold of a New Yorker cartoonist . . . unique, original, wacky ( to me ), and generally  with great gags . . . and to the unsophisticated he
APPEARS to look like he has no drawing  talent, I said he APPEARS to have no drawing talent . . . .  BUT, remember, things are not always as they appear to be . . .  this is actually the source of philosophy . . . that things are not always as they appear to be . . .

I once hired a plumber to do some cabinetwork in my house . . . didn't work out . . .

I envy Sipress . . . the writing is so great that the drawing evidentally doesn't matter . . . so they quickly tell you . . . BUT, BUT, BUT if this is true, WHY, WHY, WHY did such great well written successful iconic comic legends like Li'l Abner, Superman, Doonesbury, Boondocks and even The Simpsons  . . . go on to VASTLY IMPROVE the finish product by hiring "BETTER" artists once it is found to be a "HOT"product that is in demand . . . . We all know why . . .  it is just difficult, apparently, for some egos to admit it.  It  . . . and there are still some that will not admit IT, they actually really believe that the drawing does not matter . . . oh, really  . . . What are you, nuts ?

There are none so blind than those that will not see.

To thine own self, be true.

17549 Cartoon of the Day - Roy Delgado

This particular gag reminds me of a gem which was bought by Guccione . . . The guy, instead, is saying: " He reminds me of the son I never had.  It's the reason I had a vasectomy. "

I often thought the reason he bought it was because of the vitriol between one of his sons and him, who were not on speaking terms, and maybe, subconsciously it was a dig at the situation . . . I shoulda been a shrink, always trying to second-guess the world.

It's a lot of fun, but can land you in hot water too . . .

This is the second tracing . . . I usually do three to get the finished version . . but actually, sometimes there is a freshness in the quick unfinished drawing that 'looks' good as is . . . so . . . I'll probably let this one slide . . . I'm leaning towards doing them ALL this way . . just let it happen and see what evolves , ... it is what it is . . . anyhow, who's keeping score of all this ?

Cartoon of the Day - Roy Delgado

I love business cartoons . . having worked in my own company for 26 years, it was business every day . . . meeting with my sign shop customers, my employees, hiring, firing, meetings with architects, city planners, committees, bureaucracies in obtaining permits . . . beggars in the street, all happening in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area  . . . I loved every minute of it . . . in fact, I miss it in many ways . . .

However, living on top of this mountain in wild and winderful West Virginia has its own rewards, the quietness, solitude, a few birds chirping in the morning proudly showing you a new tune, a couple or five or sometimes 12 deer quietly tip toeing across your front yard . . . this place, since 2001, when I sold my business and retired is really almost like a writer's or painter's, or for that matter, a cartoonist's  retreat . . . where one finds creative juices flowing early in the morning and lasts usually for a twelve hour period at least and then your body beckons for rest and nourishment . . . during this period, maybe a little Schubert, Chopin or Dave Brubeck or Coltrane softly in the background, maybe a little Jack Daniels old No. 7 somewhere in the mix . . . it doesn't get any better than this . . . today, gold hits over 1600 per oz., and this time you were wise . . .

Cartoon of the Day - Roy Delgado - 17982

I always enjoy creating kid's and family ideas for cartoons . . . having had three kids  and by observing them every day, it is amazing what is right in front of you . . . like a lot of answers to our problems . . . most of the time the answers are not far away, in fact, many times you just have to look at the man in the mirror, as the late Michael Jackson used to say . . .

Cartoon of the Day - Roy Delgado 12940a

I like to to experiment from time to time by tweaking the final rendering in ink . . . here in a contemporary style you see quite a bit showing up everywhere . . . using a brush, you can really get a variation of line with very little ease . . .

In the TV cartoon series, " Dexter", this guy has mastered the technique, probably one of the more influential of the group exploiting this "new" style . . . I kinda like it . . . I notice Dexter is up for a Grammy . . .

Cartoon of the Day - Roy Delgado

This cartoon belongs in The New Yorker . . . ask anybody . . .  ( Except Bob Mankoff, the keeper of the gate . . . and probably Pat Byrnes because he said I will NEVER appear in The New Yorker ) . . . How does he KNOW that ?

Emilio Sgueglio ( Captain Marvel ), Helene Parsons, Roy Delgado/ Bunny Hoest's Cartoonists Bash- 2011

Lower left is Emilio Sgueglio, who drew the famed golden age super hero Captain Marvel comic character . . . one of my favorites because all us kids in the neighborhood liked him because he was more realistic in many ways . . .

Behind him is gagwriter extraordinaire, Helene Parsons . . .  and then yours truly with my arm on Emilio's shoulder . . . and the handle of Emilio's wheelchair poking me in the heart. ( I felt no pain actually as the first double Jack Daniels Old No. 7 Sour mash Tennessee whiskey had begun to do its work . . .

It felt great to be around the many legends in the gathering . . . I believe in osmosis and every time I attend one of these, I feel better and when I get back home behind the ole drawing board, I know I'm a better cartoonist . . . it shows . . . and I believe it . . . and you gotta be careful what you believe, right ?

Here's a quickie pencil sketch Emilio drew in my trusty sketchbook I carry around for moments just like this . . .  priceless . . .

This pic has Don Orehek, veteran cartoonist whose cartoons  have appeared in practically every major magazine and is a longtime regular in the Playboy stable of favorite  cartoonists.

Next to him is Helene Parsons, gagwriter extraordinaire  whose material as a ghostwriter for many household name cartoonists has landed her in practically every major publication.  Having worked in the advertising business most of her life writing copy and now in advertising sales you can appreciate the nexus in creativity between creative writing, sales and a positive outlook which are necessary in this business to succeed.

Girlie gag - Roy Delgado

This is about as far as any of the old
" girlie magazines " would go as far as
pushing the envelope goes . . .
mild compared to today's standards.
In fact, maybe even this one would have
been turned down . . . back in the
"good ole days " when sex was
a dirty word.

Satire - New Yorker cover art

Here is a cover of the New Yorker magazine which you will most probably never see published . . . . but you never know . . .  You'll probably never see it, but I think if they really had a sense of humor, they would publish it !

But, what the hell do I know ? . . .  if I'm so smart, why ain't I rich ?

I guarantee, it would fly off the newsstand.  A real talking point . . . especially the comedians . . .  I can see it now on all the talk shows . . " Man, did you see the cover of The New Yorker ? " . . . , On Letterman . . . Even Hannity on the other side would talk about it, maybe O'Reilly . . . .

Push the envelope, New Yorker, laugh at yourselves, don't take yourself so seriously, lighten up . . . we're all weirdos in someone else's eyes . . . .

Take Chicago, just by itself . . . Blagojevich, Tony Rezko, Jeremiah Wright, Father Ph-ph-f - f-Pfleger, the new poddy-mouth *%#@ mayor, Billy Ayers and his wife, pencil doodler P.Byrnes ( Sorry, no first name or middle initial ), ALL main street people you'd love to invite to your next barbeque, right ?

You could do this with any city, sure, but today, m'man, it's your turn in the barrel.

It's only a magazine . . .

many times mis-directed . . .

1st report from Bunny's Bash, V.Gene Meyers and Tom Stemmle and Roy Delgado

This is the first report from " Bunny's Bash ", as it is commonly referred to . . . is an annual get-together of cartoonists . . . a whole lot of them from the Long Island area . . . the Bunny thing I understand evolved from a monthly meeting called " The Berndt Toast Gang " which meets or met once a month in some restaurant and eventually came to this great event.

I'd previously gone to a couple with Bob Weber Sr. and Gill Fox back a few years ago.

Didn't get to meet as many as I wanted to, but still had a great time with great libations and good food.

A group picture was taken and I will post it and others as soon as I get organized.

V. Gene Meyers is a veteran cartoonist with sales to many major publications and has been a Playboy regular for a long time.

Tom Stemmle is Chairman of The N.J. Chapter of The National Cartoonist's Society

It's always enjoyable to meet other cartoonists.

Lenny Herman / Scott Taber - Magazine Cartoonists

These two guys were two of my favorite cartoonists . . . you saw their work everywhere . . . I wrote to both of them in the early seventies and begged for an original and both were kind to send me what you see here.

The jury gag sold and appeared in  ADVENTURE MAG., one of the many men's magazines proliferating at the time . . .HOWEVER, many of the magazines had just begun to disappear about this time also . . .

There is always something strange that happens when you hold an original piece of art in your hands and know that the artist too held it in his hand and looked at it as you just did, and examined it and scrutinized it.

I have always found it extremely helpful and useful in studying the craft in this way whenever possible.

The Scott Taber cartoon shows his simple style but is deceptive in its simplicity . . . harder to do than it looks, as we all found out in our learning process.

I clearly remember my first cartoon instructor, Billy Hon, putting it so eloquently and simple:  " Before you take a line out, you have to know where it belongs. "

It gave me more reason to understand and appreciate someone like Charles Shulz.

17942 Cartoon of the day - Roy Delgado

It has been said that the PUN is the lowest form of humor.  Although this may be true, you still see the pun all over the place from such alleged sophisticated  magazines like The New Yorker on down to the minor publications . . . it is my opinion that it all comes down on HOW the gag is staged and delivered . . . it's dicey at it's best . . . I have mixed emotions on puns . . . you actually can't live without them, and I guess I'm still a sucker for the pun.
