Luckily, most of my life, I've been BOTH.

Some of my BEST friends are IRISH.

Sometimes it's hard to be humble, just ask the

New Yorker Pencil Cartoonist . . .  the very modest,

but sometimes blowhard, Patricia Burns.

The worst part about the sap is, she's from 

Chicago, "YES WE CAN", Illinois. One of the most 

politically-corrupt long time Democrat-run (Most Governors serving prison time) places in the United States. 

In a recent poll, Chicago was voted SECOND TO LAST in cities you'd like to live in and raise a family ( Black OR White ), only DETROIT was actually LAST, ( surprised ?).

Don't get me wrong, some of my best friends are from Chicago,

Honestly, my BEST MAN, TOM KOZAK is from Chicago !

You've heard THAT one before . . . 

Like: " Some of my best friends are black . . . '

or SOME OF MY BEST FRIENDS ARE JEWS or POLACKS or Mexicans, or Left-Wingers or Right-Wingers, Anarchists,

Communists, NRA Lifetime Members, etc., ad infinitum.

. . . or as " Costanza said in SEINFELD

 a few years back in one episode where they were discussing

Gays and to clear the air so no one would think 

someone here was a Homophobe , Costanza quickly says

right in the middle of the conversation . . .

Instead of coming out with the old cliche:

He blurts out:

Parade Magazine - Roy Delgado cartoons -Aug 31/2014

  Both of these cartoons appeared in this Sunday's Parade Magazine in the Cumberland Times, ( Cumberland, MD )

I understand that different Parades in different parts of the country display different cartoons. ( B-o-o-o-H-i-s-s )

The Washington Post used to deliver the Sunday Post around

Petersburg here where I live but apparently their delivery person

up and quit about 5 weeks ago, so what I do now is buy the Cumberland Sunday paper wuich does carry the Parade.

Interesting factoid . . . Both of these cartoons were drawn

approximately 10 years ago . . . goes to show you . . . I always thought both were winners . . . and after all these years with The New Yorker  and all the others rejecting them, Pow !,  a major market like Parade buys about 20 from me in three weeks !

All oldies !  It's a good thing we get paid for this because even if there was no such thing as money,  I'd  STILL

be  writing and drawing cartoons anyway!

Maybe I'm living in a " Fool's Paradise " . . .

BULJERT cartoon in Parade - Roy Delgado

" This cartoon appeared in today's,  7/22/14 Parade Sunday Magazine - 

 Apparently, Parade is publishing their cartoons

in their Sunday supplement ( with 300,000 readers ) in an

irregular schedule, that is, one week they might publish

one cartoon, another week, they might publish two or three or even four, etc.  As far as I know, there is NO knowing when or how many they will publish  cartoons. .  . . . very unusual . . .  

Last week's issue had zero cartoons, and today's Parade had seven !  Other cartoonists featured this week are, Barsotti, bless his soul, just passed away as did Leo Cullum who also had one drawing.  Other cartoonists who had drawings in this week's Cartoon Parade feature were Dave Coverly, Maria Scrivan, Chas. Barsotti and Sipress . . . not bad company to be associated with . . . . I think Scrivan and myself are the only NON-NEW YORKER CARTOONISTS  . . .

What's in a name ? Better be careful . . . - HBR - Roy Delgado

" SEE THE SHRINK'S NAME ?. . .

 LENNY LIPSHITZ . . . I always thought it was a 

funny name . . . but it's a REAL name !

I LOVE THE NAME.  It sounds like a name you woulda seen on stage in a slapstick comedy act between striptease acts, maybe in Baltimore, circa 1958 . . . . They had some great

slapstick acts then . . . I was stationed in downtown Washington D.C. with the Ceremonial President's Ceremonial Guard Detachment at the time.

Baltimore was only 55 minutes away . . . 

" Several years ago, I used the name, LIPSHITZ in a cartoon for HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW, and it was an executive's office . . . . the lettering on the door read: Lenny Lipshitz, CEO, etc., etc. anyway, they asked me to change the name  . . . They said it sounded like it was too made up and someone could be offended by it, it didn't sound real . . . so I changed the name to read a more common Irish  name . . . I forgot the name I changed it to and I don't remember the gag. . . Anyway. I thought you might enjoy the little story behind the name , LIPSHITZ . "

After that episode, I tweaked it a little, and now I use it thusly: Leonard Lipschitz . . . I think it looks and sounds

more authentic and dignified in a slapstick way . . .  but

then, again, what the hell  do I KNOW ? "

This is the kind of cartoon you might've seen in the old men's magazines back in the 50's . . . but they're ALL gone now.  You had The General magazines ( FAMILY )

like Collier's, Look, The Saturday Evening Post . . . All were filled generously with clean gags for the entire 

family throughout the mags, ( NOT like you see the type shown here ! ) mostly in the back half of the magazine . .

You could poke fun and make the woman the butt of the joke, but as a lot of the editors jobs became women's jobs,  and those gags ceased to be funny, and I don't blame them for thinking that way . . . being filled by women it became a no-no . . . a lot of the bad-auto-driver gags always being a woman were in fact not correct, as statistics show, and of course political correctness came. Of course you don't see a lot of stuff you used to see anymore.  A lot of it you are glad it's gone. People became more educated and sophisticated, and costs for printing  went way up . . . the cartoons it seems were the first cuts in budgets so they were the first to go.

Mainly the MAGAZINES then were broken down thusly:

TRADE JOURNALS ( Who paid the least, because of smaller circulation ) . . . Then you had the FAMILY- TYPE, ( Like COLLIER'S, LOOK. The SATURDAY EVENING POST, The WOMEN'S Magazines, ( like GOOD HOUSE-

KEEPING, McCALL'S, COSMOPOLITAN, and others, many using gag cartoons on a regular basis . . . ), Then you also had FAMILY CIRCLE ( Who at one time was a major market ) and even TV GUIDE used cartoons . . . 

Then of course also you had the " GIRLY " magazines, as they called them . . . they were just slightly racy sexy cartoons, like GOOD HUMOR, TV GIRLS AND GAGS, ADAM,

 . . . And a company called ( can't think of it right now ) published a bunch like "WOW!", " ZOWIE " and about 4 or so other titles which I don't remember just now,  Then, in 1952 a young HUGH HEFNER gave birth to the greatest quality men's magazine of all time: PLAYBOY, It was the right magazine at the right time by the right person . . . 

and a little later came a OUI ( His European " PLAYBOY", you might say . . . more explicit

sex gags . . . buck-buck-naked gals, more with very suggestive poses, etc. ) actually, it was made for the European customer ( more sexually ahead than their American counterpart. )

Then, because of PLAYBOY'S success, there surfaced at least 40-50 " PLAYBOY CLONES,over the years and they all slowly but surely suffered an eventual death . . . . Some  died real fast . . . the quality was just not ever there . . . One of them, PENTHOUSE lasted the longest, but it too died a slow death just a few years ago . . . )

And of course, HUSTLER, which, if it is not pornography, I don't know what is . . . even though, I myself ( Not Peter Plum ) have sold there many times !
